Shot techniques: flush hits, smashes, drop shots and spin

BlitzVolley has no hit button: you push your character into the ball and the physics does the rest. What looks random at first is in fact entirely deterministic. Four distinct shots trigger depending on the geometry of the contact, and each has precise conditions this page spells out.
The principle: the contact axis
The moment your character touches the ball, the engine draws an imaginary line between your centre and the ball's centre. That is the contact axis, and it is along that axis that the ball is pushed away. Everything else — added speed, spin, shot type — is computed relative to it.
Two things add up at contact. First the ball bounces off you as off a curved surface: the further to the side of your blob you catch it, the more sideways it leaves. Then a share of your velocity is transferred to it: driving into the ball accelerates it, backing away cushions it. A stationary player returns a soft ball, however well positioned.
The flush hit (plein fer)
The flush hit is the basic shot executed properly: the ball leaves twenty per cent faster than it otherwise would. It triggers when three conditions hold at once:
- you are moving almost exactly along the contact axis, that is, straight into the ball, within about fifteen degrees;
- the ball is arriving roughly head-on, along the opposite axis, within about thirty degrees;
- both of you are genuinely moving — a near-stationary ball or a standing player yields nothing.
In other words: a frontal, clean contact on a ball coming at you. It is the first shot you learn and the one you keep missing for a long time, because the temptation is to strike at an angle in order to place the ball. Strike cleanly first; placement comes afterwards.
The smash
The smash multiplies outgoing speed by one and a half. Its conditions differ from the flush hit's, and they are geometric:
- you must be above the ball — the contact axis points downward;
- the ball must leave downward, or roughly flat, never in a loop;
- your controls must push toward the ball, inside a cone of about sixty degrees around the contact axis;
- the ball must reach a minimum outgoing speed: a soft contact from above is not a smash.
This is where the "down" key becomes decisive. At the peak of your jump, pressing down and into the ball makes you dive onto it: the axis points down, your controls point at the ball, the speed follows. Jumping and letting gravity do the work is rarely enough.
The super smash
The flush-hit and smash conditions are not mutually exclusive. When both hold on the same contact, the multipliers stack: the ball leaves at roughly 1.8 times its natural speed, and the game shows "Super smash!".
It is the fastest shot in the game, and it is hard because its two sets of conditions pull in opposite directions: the flush hit wants a frontal contact on a ball coming at you, the smash wants a contact from above on a ball leaving downward. The window where both coexist is narrow — typically a high, fast ball that you attack in a dive, on a descending diagonal, exactly along its incoming axis. Landing one is in fact one of the game's achievements.
The drop shot
The drop shot does the opposite: it halves outgoing speed. Its condition is simple and symmetric to the smash's — your controls must push away from the ball, inside a cone of about sixty degrees, with a genuinely committed input. You are backing off at the moment of contact.
A drop shot can never also be a smash: if both would qualify, the smash wins. Played right after two or three fast exchanges it kills the point, because an opponent who has dropped back to cover depth has no time to come back to the net.
Spin
Every contact sets the ball spinning. What matters is not your absolute speed but the tangential slip: the difference between how your surface moves along the contact point and how the ball's surface moves there. Strike the same way the ball is sliding and spin is small; strike against it and the ball leaves whirling.
That rotation does not stop at the contact, and it is what makes high-level rallies readable only through experience:
- In flight, spin curves the trajectory. A heavily topspun ball drops earlier than its parabola suggests; a sliced ball floats and carries further.
- Off a side wall or the net post, spin and tangential velocity partly swap. A spinning ball leaves the wall at an angle different from its angle of incidence, and a fast ball hitting the wall flat comes off it spinning.
That is also why the side walls are not dead ground but a weapon. A ball driven hard into your opponent's wall comes back into their half at an angle they did not anticipate.

These values are the server's default tuning. Private rooms have a fine-tuning panel that can change them for a given match; ranked play and tournaments always use the default tuning.
